"Away Day" - British High Commission and SCJ Holdings Limited

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn”

- Benjamin Franklin

The SCJ Holdings Limited joined in the British High Commission’s annual community outreach programme dubbed their Away Day. This fruitful merger of the SCJ Holdings Limited’s “Navel String” Tree Planting Project and the British High Commission’s Away Day saw the hosting by the two entities of a Pre-Away Day on September 18, 2015 at the Port Royal Primary & Infant School situated in Port Royal, Kingston and an Away Day on October 14, 2015 at five schools in the Kingston and St. Andrew area. These five schools were:

  • Dunoon Technical High School situated at 8 Crawley Road, Kingston 2,
  • Greenwich All-Age School situated at 82B Spanish Town Road, Kingston 13,
  • Melrose Primary & Junior High School situated at 3 Little Kew Road, Kingston 5,
  • Penwood High School situated at 8 Rhoden Crescent, Kingston 20, and
  • Edith Dalton James High School situated at 40 Herrick Avenue, Kingston 20.

The Pre-Away Day and the Away Day involved talking with the students and getting the students involved in the planting of a number of trees at selected areas of the school compound. One of the goals of the Pre-Away Day and the Away Day was to inform the students of the importance of trees in our lives. Students were made aware that the trees served many important functions and were not limited to beautifying the surroundings, providing shade and food only. They were informed that trees also play a significant role in improving air quality, providing oxygen and reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. They were made aware of the economic value of trees and the importance of trees in providing water, preserving the soil, and combating climate change.

Other goals of the Pre-Away Day and the Away Day were to teach students the need to take care of their environment and to foster a sense of responsibility in the students as following the planting they will be required to take care of the plants which had been planted.

The thinking behind this merger of ideas of the British High Commission and the SCJ Holdings Limited is that if the students understood the need for trees and the importance of planting and nurturing them then they would share the knowledge with others. They would educate their peers, parents, and community thereby having an undetermined and potentially far-reaching impact - making significant progress in our mission to protect the environment.
